Demonstration sites
Emilia Romagna
In Ravenna year zero started with common wheat
Ravenna, Emilia Romagna, hosts one of the three demonstration sites of the project. The nearly continental climate is typical of this area. The crop system comparison is based on the following rotation: corn, durum wheat and tomato (relevant to Conventional Cropping Systems - CCSs) and on the rotation of pea, durum wheat (with intercropping catch crop) and tomato (regarding Efficient Cropping Systems – ECSs). The year zero sowing was carried out with 180 kg / ha of Soft wheat Lucilla variety.
Tuscany
Rotations suitable for transitional/intermediate climate (between North and South environment)
Pisa, Tuscany, hosts another one of the three demonstration sites of the project. In this transitional climate area (with a climate midway between the one typical of Northern Italy and the other of Southern Italy), the crop system comparison is based on the following rotation: corn, malting barley and sunflower (relevant to Conventional Cropping Systems - CCSs) and on the rotation of chickpea, corn barley (with intercropping catch crop) and sunflower (regarding Efficient Cropping Systems – ECSs) . The year zero sowing was carried out with 210 kg/ha of durum wheat Minosse variety.
Apulia
Mediterranean climate for crop systems in Foggia
Also in Foggia, where the third demonstration sites is located, durum wheat was sowed in year zero. In this Mediterranean climate the crop system comparison is based on the following rotation: durum wheat, malting barley, and sunflower (relevant to Conventional Cropping Systems - CCSs) and lentil, malting barley, (with intercropping catch crop) and sunflower (regarding Efficient Cropping Systems – ECSs). The first sowing was carried out with 210 kg/ha of durum wheat Leondur variety.
